Alleged assault at Hotel Martinique: the timeline and the victim’s account
The alleged sexual assault is believed to have taken place on June 3 at the luxurious four-star Hotel Martinique in Magaluf. The woman, who is reported to be based in Co. Cork, is believed to have gotten into the sauna with the 18-year-old at around 6pm that evening. According to the victim's version of events, the woman is reported to have sat right next to him, shortly after swimming in the hotel pool. There, prosecutors claim, "with a lustful spirit, taking advantage of the fact that no one else was there and against his will, put her hands on his genitals and fondled them until he said: 'No, no, no' and left." The woman is then believed to have headed to the swimming pool before following the man to the Turkish steam bath, also known as a hamam. Police reports then explained that following the incident, the man spoke to staff at the hotel, who then alerted the authorities.
Prosecution seek custodial sentence and compensation; defence’s stance and next steps
Lawyers representing the man have pushed for a custodial sentence, as well as paying the man £440 in compensation for the incident. Police are also expected to be called in as witnesses to the fallout from the matter, alongside both parties of the case. Sources around the hotel said the Swede was already in the sauna when the woman entered; she initiated the conversation, asking him how long he had been in Magaluf. The woman is then believed to have headed to the swimming pool before following the man to the hamam. Police reports explained that following the incident, the man spoke to staff at the hotel, who then alerted the authorities. When officers arrived at the hotel to arrest the woman, she was reportedly with her husband when she was detained. She was then taken away to be questioned at the police station, and spent the night there before she was released. Insiders revealed in June that the woman had allegedly admitted to groping the man's privates when she appeared in court the next day. However, she has since reportedly backtracked and explained it was a misunderstanding, instead saying she thought he was interested in her after they engaged in small talk. However, this version of events was not echoed in her other statements. Her lawyer insisted to the judge to "discontinue" the case as he "didn't consider a crime had taken place" that night.
