Patrons span professions, from teacher to doctor, with one 53-year-old claiming to have come to heal
The men ranged from a teacher, prosecutor, surgeon and a 53-year-old doctor, who told police he only came in to 'heal and avoid the after-work traffic jam.' Speaking to Strait Times, the married with kids doctor said: 'I usually come here to avoid the traffic after work. I can relax in the sauna and jacuzzi for a while.' 'I don't want to comment on what I did, but yes, such activities do take place here.' During the raid, police found dozens of condoms and lubricant in the centre. As well as the 201 male patrons, seven employees were also arrested. Among the 201 men, the ages range from 19 to 60-years-old with 24 men being confirmed as foreigners, according to Singapore-based publication Mothership. The health centre did include equipment and facilities that would be in a health centre, including saunas, jacuzzis, gym, spa and swimming pool.
Facilities and charges disclosed
Each guest to establishment was charged 35 Malaysian ringgit (£6.40) per visit. A charge of RM10 (£1.83) was also paid for a first-time visit registration fee. The centre included equipment and facilities that would be found in a health centre, including saunas, jacuzzis, gym, spa and swimming pool. Kuala Lumpur Deputy Chief of Police Datuk Mohd Azani told reporters: 'The centre attracts many local and foreign customers, including men from South Korea, Indonesia, Germany and China.'
Authorities' statements and investigations
80 Muslim men were investigated by the religious authorities under Section 29 of the Federal Territories Religious Act for engaging in indecent activities at the centre, according to Guang Ming Daily. The others have been investigated by the police under Section 387B of the Penal Code (unnatural sexual acts).
Remand update and aftershocks
In a major update on the incident, Malaysian publication The Star reported that a total of 171 local men detained in a raid were freed after a magistrate rejected a late remand bid. It was believed that the delay was due to the large number of arrests, and that officers had to process each individual separately.
